Princess Di: An Ultimate Fashion Icon

Princess Di: An Ultimate Fashion Icon

The 80s have gripped 2016s spring/summer and autumn/winter fashion shows with all its big haired flare and broad shouldered glory.

No talk of the 80s is complete without the mention of the celebrated Lady Diana, the queen of hearts.

Diana attended the Serpentine Gallery charity event in a body hugging and leggy Christina Stambolian mini dress when her husband publicly confessed his infidelities.

Following day, every front page of reputable newspapers was a detailed summary of her dress rather than her husband’s confession. This was the effect she had on people and media. Let us go through the most unforgettable dresses of Lady Di throughout the 80s to draw inspiration from!

1980

Not an official royal back then, this teenaged teacher’s assistant had an immaculate wardrobe with silks and wools in pastel colours. She attended Princess Margaret’s 50th birthday party in a romantic pink dress with a plush wool coat, the style which was then followed by many of hers contemporaries.

1981

This was the year Diana Spencer married Prince Charles. Her wedding dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, was without a doubt, amongst the most talked about wedding gowns of all times. Made of fine British silk, it featured a spectacular train twenty five feet long.

The twenty year old was all about satin skirts and bouffant petticoats at the time.

1985

In 1985, the princess was famously called ‘Dynasty Di’ by the tabloids because she wore broad, puff shouldered gowns frequently at various occasions.

Her dressing cuts embodied a sense of a feminine control. Her designers say that Princess Diana was very much involved in the development of her wardrobe, and was constantly supervising designers to fine tune the garment according to her style.

1987

The year 1987 saw the historic moment of Princess Di’s White House dance with John Travolta. She wore Victor Edelstein’s navy velvet column gown which was based on Edwardian evening cuts.

1989

1989 was the year of weddings and benefits. The Princess remained close to her beloved pastels and sheath dresses with an occasional splash of colour in the neons. The most famous dress for this year was, by far, the “Elvis Dress”, designed by Catherine Walker.

It was a pearl encrusted bolero with Elizabethan ruffles and collar, inspired by the King of Rock and Roll.

Infuse these wide shoulders and a minimal splash of colours in your daily wardrobe by shopping for the designer women’s dresses at The Nora.
