A Comprehensive Guide to Skirt Styles

A Comprehensive Guide to Skirt Styles

Of all women apparels, skirts are the most classic and feminine pieces that are suitable for all occasions –casual or formal. With an unending variety, they can portray subtle, sexy, simple ad show-stopping. Got an office gala, there is a skirt for that, need to run after toddlers in grocery store, there is a skirt for that, dressing for success, yup there is one for that too. With ample cuts and styles, they are a must in every girl’s wardrobe.

Prepare yourself to get some hands down information if you are unable to decide what skirt to wear when and what to pair it with. We have got it all covered in our comprehensive guide to skirt styles.

Long Styles

Maxi

The longest in the list, a maxi skirt is an ankle-length skirt. With a variety of styles and fabrics to choose from, the maxi can be fitting tight or loose, flowing away from the body as you walk. Mostly, maxi skirts are worn in casual events but can also be styled for a semi-formal event. There is a maxi skirt for all body types, but suits taller women the most. Apple-shaped ladies look best with skin-hugging skirts whereas pear-shaped ladies can aim for a loose skirt with a tucked-in shirt.

Midi

Also known as a tea-skirt, Midi skirt falls to your mid-calf, perfect for formal occasions because of its conservative length. It can be paired with a number of tops such as loose tucked-in the waistband top, crop tops or even fitted tops if you are in your 20s. In addition, it is best styled with high heels and looks perfect on taller woman.

Knee-Length Styles

Bell-Shaped

As the name suggests, it resembles a bell. Made from heavier fabrics, the skirt flares from the waist and falls straight to the knee. Looks best on the apple-shaped body type, the skirt can easily be worn with a fitted top at formal occasions.

Full

The full knee-length skirt looks flattering on all body types. The skirt clings to the true waistband of the body and falls freely from there to the knee. Usually worn to religious occasions and family events, the best way to carry it off is with a fitted tucked-in top to highlight the waist.

Pleated

Pleated skirts were traditionally associated with school uniforms. Thicker pleats suggest school uniform whereas thinner and conjoint pleats shout out trendy and modern. The skirt comes in a variety of styles such as the calf-length, mid-thigh and knee-length, which means it is ideal for all body types. Top it off with a tucked top and you will be good to go.

A-Line

The most distinguishing feature of an A-line skirt is that when laid flat, it forms a triangle. The skirt when worn flares out gently from the corners. These are typically knee-length making them a suitable wear for all occasions. It looks best on pear-shaped ladies since it complements their waist without clinging too much to the hips.

Pencil

A staple wear in the wardrobe of all working women, pencil skirts are appropriate and accepted office attires. These are often paired with a professional suit jackets with buttoned-down shirts or a silk shell top. It looks good on all body types except for pear-shaped ladies since it augments their wide hips in an inappropriate manner.

Denim Skirt

A variant of the pencil skirt, Denim or jeans skirts comes in many lengths. They could either be knee-length or slightly above the knee and looks best when paired with a buttoned-up silk shirt or a t-shirt with a statement necklace. As for the body type, no one carries it better than pear-shaped ladies and women with boyish figures.

Short Skirt Styles

Mini-skirt

Skirts with hemlines that end well above the knee are called mini-skirts. This type of skirt created hype back in the sixties and is still a popular choice of attire for younger women. Mini-skirts can be paired with almost all kinds of shirts depending upon the severity of the occasion. For a casual outing, a long-sleeved loose shirt would be more appropriate whereas on a night out with your girlfriends, fitted tops will look heavenly especially if you have an apple-shaped body.

Skater Skirt

Commonly known as the circle skirt, this skirt sits at the waistband and is flared forming a circle when laid flat. Universally flattering for all body types, the skater skirts look best with fitted cropped tops showing some skin.
